Tuberculosis of the Colon

Abstract
Gastrointestinal tuberculosis is frequently compilcated from extensive pulmonary tuberculosis and, is also caused by ingestion of contaminated milk. Some patients with intestinal tuberculosis may- present, however, without any evidence of pulmonary tuberculosis. Also, tuberculous infection of -thee intestinal tract is rarely transmitted hematogenously. Most often it is secondary, to pulmonary lesions and the mycobacterium is carried to the intestine in swallowed aputum or milk. The most common site of tuberculous lesion in the intestinal tract is the, cecum and then ileum and colon in order. The pathological classification of tuberculous.enterocolitis is ulcerative, hypertrophic and ulcerohypertrophic type. The hypertrophic type is more common distal to the ileocecal junction. Although tuberculous enterocolisis is uncommon, it requires consideration in the differential diagnois of many gastrointestinal lesions as it may simulate nontuberculous inflammatory processor neoplasm. Antituberculous chemotherapy has dramatically reduced the morbidity and mortality, of this lesion. In the absence of ileocecal tuberculousis, the diagnosis of colonic lesion is exceedingly difficult, and must be differentiated from the malignant lesions. We report three cases of tuberculous colitis treated surgically and reviewed literatures.
